My name is Brian Austin and I am an Engineering Manager leading high-performing remote, distributed software engineering teams.

“Engineering without cruft” is my commitment to removing waste in how we plan, build, and operate software, while preserving the rigor that keeps systems reliable.

My goal as an engineering manager: build teams where people can do their best work, where processes help rather than hinder, and where platforms make shipping high‑quality software the natural outcome of everyday practice.

I believe that the most successful teams are built with a relentless focus on three core areas: People, Process and Platform.

People

Teams, not heroes. Organizations where small, empowered squads own outcomes and can make technical decisions without waiting on a committee.

Safety and candor. Create environments where engineers can raise risks, disagree, and learn from mistakes without fear, while still holding a high bar for impact.

Growth as a first‑class concern. Mentoring, clear expectations, and deliberate skill development are part of the job, not an optional extra when there’s time.

Process

Minimum viable structure. Favor the lightest process that reliably delivers: tight feedback loops, clear definitions of “ready” and “done,” and visible priorities.

Flow over busyness. Less care about how “busy” a team is and more about cycle time, predictability, and the quality of what reaches production.

Metrics for learning, not blame. Data should reveal bottlenecks and guide experiments, not be used as a weapon against individuals.

Platform

Tools as force multipliers. CI/CD, testing, observability, and deployment pipelines exist to make shipping safe and routine, not rare and stressful.

Architecture aligned with teams. System design should reflect how teams are structured, reducing coordination tax and enabling true ownership.

Automation over repetition. Anything a human does the same way three times should be a candidate for automation, freeing engineers to focus on harder problems.
